Why good candidates lose
From application to academy — and most of it is silence. The candidates who quit, quit during the quiet part.
One announcement instruction ignored and you are removed from consideration. Not scored lower. Removed.
Every scored interview question wants the situation, what you did, and the outcome. Miss one part and a 5 becomes a 3.
Every one of these is a preparation failure, not a qualification failure. That is the whole argument for reading anything on this site.
Who is writing this
Seventeen years in law enforcement. Almost ten of them in a patrol car, desperate to get out. Four years of federal applications, four offers, and one phone call that changed the trajectory of my life.
Today I'm a supervisor at a federal law enforcement agency and I've sat as a rater on hiring panels — transcribing applicants' answers word for word and scoring them afterward. I've watched qualified people lose on things nobody warned them about.
I also failed a polygraph outright at one agency and went inconclusive twice at another before passing. I carry a badge anyway. That is the single most useful thing I can tell you.

Federal law enforcement hiring takes a year or more, and almost no agency publishes a total. Here are the only durations they do publish, and why yours varies.
